Balestrand, an Art Nouveau village in the heart of Sognefjord: architecture, hiking, cruises and practical tips for an authentic stay in Norvège.

Balestrand is a picturesque village nestled in the heart of Sognefjord, one of Norvège's most celebrated fjords. Surrounded by majestic mountains and crystalline waters, it offers a breathtaking natural setting. Balestrand captivates with its calm, authentic atmosphere, ideal for those seeking tranquility and intimate contact with nature. It's also an excellent starting point for exploring this splendid Norwegian region.

History of Balestrand

Balestrand's history dates back to the 13th century, but it was in 1850 that it was established as a municipality by combining the parishes of Vangsnes, Tjugum, and Mundal. In 1904, the town was struck by tragedy: a devastating fire destroyed much of the village. However, this catastrophe allowed Balestrand to rebuild in a distinctive style: Art Nouveau architecture, a legacy that endures today and made the town renowned.

During the 20th century, several territorial reorganizations took place. In 1964, a land exchange between the municipalities of Balestrand, Vik, and Leikanger slightly modified the borders, and in 2000, Balestrand lost part of its territory to the municipality of Sogndal. Then, in 2020, Balestrand permanently merged with Sogndal and Leikanger, ending its status as an independent municipality, but continuing to exist as an essential tourist destination.

Today, Balestrand retains its traditional charm while modernizing to welcome visitors. It is known for its Kviknes Hotel, a village landmark, and Saint Olaf Church, an architectural marvel inspired by the famous stavkirke—Norvège's traditional wooden churches.
