The History of Loen

Loen is home to some of Norway's most ancient farms, such as Saeten Tjugen and Loen, which likely date back to pre-Christian times. Yet Loen has also witnessed natural tragedies. In 1905 and 1936, two massive landslides triggered enormous waves, destroying homes and vegetation and claiming 135 lives. These events left a profound mark on the village's character.

The best time to visit Loen is between June and September, when temperatures are pleasant for exploring the region, though rain is possible. In summer, average daytime temperatures hover around 20°C, with milder nights around 10°C. The summer months offer comfortable temperatures, ideal for enjoying outdoor activities.

The colder months, particularly from November to February, can be harsh, with nighttime temperatures near −4°C and frequent snowfall (approximately 437 cm annually).

By Car:

  • From Oslo: The journey takes approximately 6 hours 25 minutes to cover 482 km. The route passes through spectacular landscapes, including the Strynefjellet.
  • From Bergen: The distance is roughly 300 km, with a travel time of 5 hours 30 minutes. This route includes ferry crossings offering magnificent fjord views.

By Bus:

  • From Oslo: Vy buses (line VY146) depart from Oslo's bus terminal toward Stryn, with a connection to Loen. The journey takes approximately 8 hours 35 minutes.
  • From Bergen: Take an express bus to Måløy, then another to Stryn, before connecting to Loen. Total travel time is approximately 10 hours.

Train and Bus:

  • From Oslo: Take the train from Nationaltheatret to Otta, then a bus to Stryn, with a connection to Loen. The journey takes approximately 8 hours 35 minutes.

By Air:

  • Nearby Airports: The closest airports to Loen are Sandane, Hovden/Ørsta, and Vigra/Aalesund. Airlines such as Widerøe, SAS, Norwegian, and KLM serve these destinations. From the airport, bus transfers or car rental can be arranged to reach Loen.

From Olden:

  • If you're on a cruise in Olden, a shuttle service connects the port to Loen in approximately 10 minutes along Nordfjord. This service is ideal for accessing Loen Skylift.
